Bosch are proud to add ‘Secure by Default’ as a quality standard for our IP camera range. This provides customers with a guarantee that all our IP cameras are built to the UK standards for cyber security.

This initiative demonstrates our commitment to our end-users’ data security, whilst also showing why our cameras are a first choice for integrators and installers - as installation time and associated risks are reduced because the default settings are designed for minimal vulnerabilities from installation.

A commitment to data security

Andrew Pigram, Managing Director for Bosch Security Systems UK, spoke of why it is important for manufacturers to join the initiative:

“Since its creation over 100 years ago, Bosch has been a pioneer of technology innovation and driving industry standards. We take cyber security extremely seriously, and Secure by Default brings together international IT standards and industry best practice specifically suited to the physical security market. By combining product specification, IT cyber standards together with out-of-the-box product configuration settings, Secure by Default delivers all of these important elements effectively and efficiently to the market, reducing the risks of system vulnerability whilst also lowering installation time and demands on valuable resource.

However, it does not just end there; it is estimated that the majority of successful cyber-attacks are as a result of hackers exploiting and taking advantage of old vulnerabilities that may have gone unpatched. Attackers are constantly looking for new vulnerabilities or ways to circumvent existing security measures. To help protect end-users, manufacturers should provide Security Advisories, which identify, classify and prioritise vulnerabilities with recommended fixes, mitigations and workarounds. A policy of Vulnerability Disclosure to ensure that systems integrators are informed and can easily access this information is essential to keep installations protected. We would encourage all manufacturers to adopt Secure by Default and appropriate vulnerability and open disclosure policies in support of driving a consistent and minimum basic cyber security standard for IP video systems for the benefit of the industry, operators and clients alike.”

What makes our IP technology so secure?

Bosch is driving a systematic approach to maximize data security by considering physical safety and cybersecurity simultaneously. Our system approach is the key to achieving the highest standards in end-to-end data security:

  • We create trust by assigning every component in the network an authentication key.
  • We secure data from hackers by encrypting it at the hardware level, using a cryptographic key that is safely stored in an unique built-in Trusted Platform Module (TPM).
  • We offer easy ways to manage user access rights ensuring that only authorized people have access to your data.
  • We can support the set-up of a Public Key Infrastructure.
